At six months, you might notice that your baby's become more fearful naltrexone drug of new people. But fortunately, her shyness will probably fade quickly, and after a few minutes she'll relax and become sociable and ready to play.
Babies in the middle of their first year are usually over twice as heavy as they were at birth. Six-month-old babies are undergoing rapid development at this time. Common concerns at this age are teething, starting solid foods and establishing a sleep schedule.
Physical Development
Sitting up Your 6-month-old is likely rolling from his tummy onto his back and may even be able to roll back onto his tummy from there. He may be sitting up on his own very soon. Your baby is also probably able to pick up small objects with his thumb and forefinger by pinching them.
Teething usually occurs around 6 months of age. Your baby may have already sprouted his first tooth, or it may appear very soon.
Another exciting physical milestone for 6-month-old babies is that they are probably showing their permanent eye color by now. Your baby's newborn blue eyes may be brown or green now, or perhaps they are blue for life.
Most babies at this age seem to be full of energy. Their mobility is increasing faster than ever and they are eager to practice their new abilities.
Cognitive Development
Your baby is starting to understand the concept of object permanence. He is learning that even when he can't see mom or dad or his favorite toy, those things still exist. He may show this understanding by playing "peek-a-boo" or by looking for objects that have fallen on the ground. By this age, he will probably protest if you take away a toy or object he is holding. He is also starting to become more independent and realize that he and mom are not "one."
Social Development
Laughter Your baby may begin to show a bit of stranger anxiety by crying or fussing around unfamiliar people, but chances are just as good that he is friendly and curious when meeting new people.
Babies also start to let their sense of humor shine through at this age. Your baby likely has favorite phrases, sounds and facial expressions that never fail to make him laugh.
Your baby's language skills are rapidly developing as well. Babies in the middle of their first year are babblers and should be able to string together vowel-consonant sounds by now.
Nutrition
Baby food Although most of your baby's nutrition is still coming from breast milk or formula, he is ready to start solid foods, if he hasn't already. Rice cereal, oatmeal and pureed fruits and vegetables are excellent foods for babies at this age. Now is also a good time to start cup training.
Sleep
Sleep Most 6-month-olds sleep for six to 10 hours each night and take one- to three-hour naps during the day. Of course, each baby is different, but your baby should be getting a total of 11 to 15 hours of sleep per day. If your baby still isn't sleeping for at least six hours at night, try establishing a bedtime routine in order to help baby (and you) get more sleep.
